Ayurvedic medicine teaches that each individual has his or her own unique genetic constitution, known as prakruti. This is expressed by three energies or doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. Our doshas all consist of a unique proportion of the five elements (space, air, fire, water and earth) which exist in nature.
Though your constitution is fixed at birth, factors such as diet, lifestyle and climate can alter your constitution and its internal balance of the five elements. A basic Ayurvedic principle says that by altering these factors, you can affect your balance and counteract changes in your environment.
Ayurvedic healing reestablishes harmony by taking into account your physical, mental and emotional state in order to increase awareness, restore health and promote better quality of life.

At the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, we offer five Ayurvedic therapies, ranging from full-body Abhyanga massage to therapies that target specific areas of your body:
Abhyanga: This relaxing full-body massage uses gentle strokes with warm herbal oil. The treatment has four primary purposes: eliminate excess, purify and balance, rejuvenate and strengthen the tissues, and maintain health in the body. It does so by nourishing the entire body, improving lymphatic and arterial circulation, enhancing delivery of nutrients, stimulating digestive enzymes, decreasing the effects of aging, helping lubricate the joints and increasing overall circulation. It calms the nerves, reducing stress in body and benefiting sleep. It also nourishes, softens and smooths skin.
Shirodhara: This deeply relaxing therapy uses a continuous stream of warm herbal oil poured over the forehead to promote physical and emotional balance and rejuvenate the mind. Shirodhara revitalizes the central nervous system, enhances circulation, promotes detoxification, alleviates stress and anxiety, encourages sound sleep and promotes the glow of the skin.
Kati basti: In this lower-back treatment, the healing properties of warm herbal oil bathe the lumbar region to provide relief from painful conditions. A series of treatments is generally recommended for chronic and acute conditions of the back.
Janu basti: This knee treatment uses warm medicinal oil to bathe the knee joint. This healing therapy lubricates the joints, cleans and fortifies the blood, and builds strong muscle and connective tissue. A series of treatments may be recommended for treating osteoarthritis of the knee, inflammation of the knee joint, and knee stiffness and pain.
Greeva basti: This therapeutic neck treatment uses warm medicated oil to bathe the back of the neck, strengthening bone and tissue and promoting a healthy spine. A series of treatments may be recommended for chronic and acute neck conditions.
In conventional medicine, the focus is on pacifying symptoms rather than returning to a place of harmony. Ayurvedic medicine at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute empowers you to take an active role in the healing process.
Ayurvedic therapies distinguish your genetic make-up (known as prakruti) and the state of imbalance (known as vikruti), allowing you to return to the dynamic state of health that is unique to you. Our treatments complement your existing health protocol while strengthening your inner healing capacities. This allows you to attain a state of well-being in an efficient and graceful way.
