Kidney Stone Management

At the UCI Health Center for Urological Care, we have extensive experience in the treatment and management of complex kidney stone disease.

Advanced technology

UCI Health urologists developed many of the minimally invasive technologies and methods that are widely used today to manage complex kidney stone disease. They have enabled our surgeons to treat patients with all aspects of kidney stone disease for more than 20 years without the need for open surgery.

These technologies include:

  • Ureteral access sheaths
  • Prone cystoscopy
  • Endoscopic-guided nephrostomy track creation
  • Ultrasound targeting

One successful treatment method is percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), which involves the use of a ureterscope combined with ultrasound guidance. This unique application of direct endoscopic vision and novel ultrasound technologies allows our experienced urologists to remove or destroy very large and complex stones safely and effectively.

The Center for Urological Care also is equipped with advanced operating suites designed specifically for minimally invasive stone treatments. Ceiling-mounted, multi-screen booms give surgeons simultaneous views of fluoroscopic monitors and high-definition images from the ureterscope to ensure precision and safety.

Metabolic evaluation for stone prevention

After treatment to remove or destroy the stones, our urologists work with you to prevent a recurrence.

All patients with complex stone disease undergo a comprehensive metabolic evaluation, including 24-hour urine and serum metabolic evaluations. The results allow our experts to help guide patients by optimizing diet, vitamin supplements and occasional medical therapy to minimize or prevent development of future stones.
