Stop colon cancer before it starts

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of U.S. cancer deaths. Our colonoscopy experts are national leaders in the detection of colorectal cancers. They will stop at nothing to find and remove precancerous polyps, very possibly saving your life. We use ground-breaking AI and under-water technologies to find polyps others can't.

We perform colon screenings on your schedule, with your comfort always in mind. We've worked hard to take the discomfort and inconvenience out of the procedure, so there’s no reason to delay.

Why choose UCI Health?

  • Polyp detection rates. Ours are among the highest in the nation. If we find one or more polyps during your screening, we remove them on the spot.
  • "Underwater colonoscopies." We use water during the first phase of the procedure, which improves comfort and polyp detection.
  • Artificial intelligence. Our doctors use AI technology to boost detection of polyps that are not easily visible, even to the trained eye.
  • A range of sedation options. Have your colonoscopy with zero, a little or full sedation. You may even change your mind on the day of the procedure.
  • Low-residue diet prep. Our patients can eat scrambled eggs, yogurt and other low-residue foods instead of a clear liquid diet the day before the procedure.
  • Expertise. Some of our doctors have performed more than 20,000 colonoscopies safely and painlessly.
  • Genetic testing. We can assess patients who may be at higher risk for colon cancer.

Watch two of our leading colorectal disease experts participate in a live colonoscopy and see how safe and painless the procedure can be.

Frequently asked questions

  • Who needs a colonoscopy?

We recommend that all men and women over age 45 get a colonoscopy every 10 years. If you have a family history of colorectal cancers or other risk factors, we recommend having the procedure more often. Consult your physician to learn the best interval for you.

  • Is the procedure uncomfortable?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort. To help alleviate any discomfort, we offer sedation before the procedure if you request it. Medication also may be given at any time during the procedure. Some patients ask to be put to sleep for the duration of the colonoscopy.

  • How do I prepare for the procedure?

Your physician will give you a preparation guide. We typically recommend shifting from high-fiber foods a few days before the procedure. A day or so before the procedure, you’ll take bowel-clearing medication. We also offer patients the option to eat low-residue foods such as scrambled eggs and yogurt that are easily passed through the bowel. Our team will ensure that your colonoscopy prep is complete before the procedure begins.
