UCI Health Physician Network Expands with Beach Orthopaedic Specialty Institute, enhancing orthopaedic care in Orange County
Demand for specialized care driven by aging population, increasing rates of musculoskeletal conditions, desire to remain active
Orange, Calif. — The UCI Health Physician Network continues its expansion with the addition of Beach Orthopaedic Specialty Institute (BOSI) as a key participant.
This milestone for Orange County’s only academic health system follows the recent inclusion of Los Alamitos Cardiovascular and OC GastroCare in the network, which now reaches more than 550 providers and 150 locations. This expansion reinforces the commitment of UCI Health to transforming healthcare delivery through innovative, patient-centered partnerships across Southern California.
The fellowship-trained surgeons at BOSI are experts in:
- Orthopaedic surgery
- Fractures
- Sports medicine
- Shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist conditions
- Spine care
- Joint replacement
- Biologics
- Osteoporosis and bone health
The practice pairs that bench with advanced in-office diagnostics and treatment. For patients, that means one practice can carry a case from imaging through surgery, with UCI Health faculty, clinical trials and quaternary capability behind it when a case grows more complex.
“We were looking for an orthopaedic group with real depth across sports medicine, spine and joint replacement that also has the operational maturity to work inside a clinically integrated network. Beach Orthopaedic Specialty Institute, which already has a strong relationship with the Los Alamitos community and our hospital in Los Alamitos, met these criteria,” said Tatyana Popkova, chief strategy officer and senior vice president, ambulatory, at UCI Health.
An aging county and rising demand for mobility care
The demand for specialized orthopaedic care in Orange County is significant and growing, driven by an aging population, increasing rates of musculoskeletal conditions and a growing desire among residents to maintain active, healthy lifestyles.
"Joining the UCI Health Physician Network strengthens our ability to provide patients with seamless access to comprehensive orthopaedic care while maintaining the personalized approach our community has come to expect," said Dr. Raymond Klug, chief executive officer at Beach Orthopaedic Specialty Institute.
In Orange County, adults 65 and older currently account for approximately 17% of the population. This demographic is projected to continue growing significantly in the coming decades, increasing demand for orthopaedic and mobility-focused healthcare services, according to the Orange County Office on Aging and the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC). As the population ages, the prevalence of conditions such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and degenerative joint disease is expected to rise, resulting in greater demand for joint replacement, spine care and rehabilitation services.
“This collaboration expands access to high-quality musculoskeletal care and creates new opportunities to coordinate treatment across the continuum, helping patients achieve better mobility and outcomes," said Dr. Nitin Bhatia, chair of Orthopaedic Surgery Services at UCI Health and a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the UC Irvine School of Medicine.
Arthritis affects approximately one in four U.S. adults and is a leading cause of disability, impacting mobility, independence and quality of life for millions of Americans, according to the Arthritis Foundation. Sports injuries, workplace injuries and other musculoskeletal conditions further contribute to the need for timely access to specialized orthopaedic care throughout the region.
Access to comprehensive orthopaedic services, including joint replacement, spine care, fracture management and rehabilitation, is essential to reducing pain, restoring function and helping patients return to their daily activities. The UCI Health Physician Network, with Beach Orthopaedic Specialty Institute's contributions, aims to meet these needs through integrated, evidence-based care and advanced diagnostics.
