TrueBeam Radiotherapy and Radiosurgery System
The UCI Health is one of the only healthcare providers in Orange County and the region to offer the latest in radiation oncology therapy with the TrueBeam™ STx linear accelerator.
This advanced radiotherapy and radiosurgery system delivers powerful, highly focused radiation beams far faster and with greater precision to destroy tumors in the body while minimizing effects on healthy tissue. For patients, this means shorter treatment times and less potential discomfort.
Targeting multiple cancers
Our radiation oncology specialists at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center use the noninvasive, image-guided TrueBeam STx system to treat cancers of the:
- Gynecologic cancers
- Head and neck
TrueBeam is designed to perform several kinds of radiation treatments, including:
- Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for brain and spinal tumors that are not amenable to surgery or as an adjunct to surgery
- Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) elsewhere in the body to target tumors as small as a few millimeters in diameter with great precision
- Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), which aims radiation beams of differing intensities at the tumor from multiple angles, targeting the entire tumor with a high degree of accuracy and minimizing radiation exposure to adjacent tissue
This technology allows radiation oncologists to deliver higher, more precise doses per treatment, which may reduce overall treatment time — sometimes from weeks to days. This can mean a reduction in side effects that are often associated with radiation treatment. Greater doses per treatment and radiation sessions that last minutes compared to an hour or more can be especially beneficial for patients who are already ill.
How it works
TrueBeam STx is the most advanced linear accelerator system of its kind, combining imaging precision and 360-degree rotational features.
Because the system can rotate around the patient, it can deliver prescribed radiation doses from any angle. Its real-time, three-dimensional imaging tools allow clinicians to “see” the tumor as they treat it and to sculpt the beams to match the tumor's size and shape.
Its image-guided targeting system can control the beams of radiation to within a millimeter, even for tumors that move during normal breathing.
This precise and noninvasive treatment offers new possibilities for patients with complex cancers in areas where organ motion can impact treatment. It also means that clinicians are able to deliver the same focused radiation directly to the tumor each day of treatment, making it safer and more effective.
