IN THE NEWS: The Wall Street Journal article “The Ultimate Battle Against MRSA” highlights the work of UCI Health infectious disease expert Dr. Susan Huang and her research into combating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. She is a leading proponent of an approach called “universal decolonization,” which calls for bathing incoming ICU patients with the germ-fighting soap chlorhexidine and administering the nasal antibiotic ointment mupirocin.

The results of Dr. Huang’s Reduce MRSA study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2013, demonstrated that the universal decolonization protocol was superior to other approaches, and especially to routine care, reducing MRSA by 37 percent and all types of bloodstream infections by 44 percent.
