Dr. S. Mohammad Shafie is a board-certified UCI Health vascular neurologist who specializes in the the management of stroke and cerebrovascular diseases. He serves as associate director of the UCI Health Comprehensive Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center

Shafie received a medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond, Va. He completed an internal medicine internship at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md., followed by a residency in neurology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. Next, he received fellowship training in vascular neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Before medical school, he earned master's and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering with a focus on bioengineering at the University of Louisville in Louisville. Ky.

His research interests include translational and clinical investigations aimed at improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the entire spectrum of cerebrovascular diseases. He is the principal investigator and co-investigator of multiple StrokeNet clinical trials sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and private industry. He serves as fellowship director of vascular neurology for the UCI School of Medicine's Department of Neurology and is actively involved in the teaching of medical students, residents and fellows.
