Vocal Cord Polyp

A polyp is a small, fluid-filled lesion that often occurs on both vocal cords. Polyps tend to get larger with increased voice use.

Symptoms and causes

Vocal cords vibrate to produce sound. When polyps are present, they cause the voice to sound hoarse.

Polyps occur when the voice has been overused or misused.

Treatment

The first treatment often involves voice therapy.

If voice therapy doesn't resolve the problem, surgery may be needed to remove the polyp.

Following surgery, voice rest and voice therapy is very important.
