ALS team takes the ice bucket challenge

August 18, 2014

The UCI Health ALS & Neuromuscular Center accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and then nominated Dr. Tahseen Mozaffar, the center’s director, to take the challenge.

Better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord that affects as many as 30,000 Americans. About 5,000 people are diagnosed with the condition each year. There is no cure.

The UCI Health ALS program provides comprehensive management of ALS for about 175 patients. The center runs numerous clinical trials that draw patients from all over Southern California and as far away as Texas.
