Ebola is not a death sentence, UCI Health virologist says

In the news: The survival of six U.S. patients diagnosed with Ebola shows that the disease is "not a death sentence," says UC Irvine virologist Michael Buchmeier, echoing the conclusion of many U.S. virus experts.

Though small in number, the ability to provide these patients — including Dallas nurses Amber Vinson and Nina Pham — with breathing tubes, large-bore intravenous lines, blood dialysis, electrolyte monitoring and around-the-clock attention are largely responsible for the survival of patients under advanced Western care, experts say.

"It's a beatable disease," says Buchmeier, PhD, a UC Irvine School of Medicine professor and researcher of infectious diseases.
