Dr. Shruti Gohil to join AirTalk LIVE: COVID Doctors Retrospective

Dr. Shruti Gohil, UCI Health associate medical director of Epidemiology & Infection Prevention, will join a panel of experts to discuss lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Shruti K. Gohil will join LAist 89.3 “AirTalk” host Larry Mantle for a special live event bringing together COVID-19 doctors who regularly appeared on the radio program to discuss what they see for the future with coronavirus on Wednesday at Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium.
Gohil, associate medical director of Epidemiology & Infection Prevention at UCI Health, has been a frequent guest on the morning news program throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reflecting on the early days of the pandemic, she said appearing on “AirTalk” and other programs was vitally important for infectious disease experts like herself and other physicians facing down a highly transmissible, deadly virus whose effects were made worse by misinformation and public confusion.
“I was incredibly busy at the time, we all were. But it was often the only venue we had to reach patients and people in the community, to help them understand what was at stake for them with COVID.”
Gohil said she and others will be parsing lessons learned from the pandemic for months and years to come. But already the healthcare community has become very sophisticated in its ability to escalate and de-escalate infection prevention measures in response to specific threats.
“Pre-COVID, every year we would have significant spread of influenza and other viruses. We never thought about masking. During COVID, we had zero admissions for the flu. Now if we see an uptick in flu or COVID, we could consider reinvigorating masking requirements because of what we learned about preventing the spread of the virus.”
