Brain Tumor Program: Second Opinions

Learning that you may have a brain tumor can be frightening. Many people are shocked, which can make it especially difficult to make decisions about the next steps in your care. It is important to get treatment right away, which can add stress to an already difficult situation. However, pausing to meet with our brain tumor experts can provide helpful information so you can move forward with confidence.

Because we are one of few dedicated brain tumor programs serving Orange County and surrounding communities, patients and referring physicians frequently look to the UCI Health Comprehensive Brain Tumor Program for second opinions. Our team of nationally and internationally recognized brain tumor experts works seamlessly to deliver second opinions and treatment recommendations as quickly as possible.

Brain tumors: getting a second opinion

To help you get information as quickly as possible, we promise a prompt response to all second opinion requests. In fact, if we are not immediately available, one of our physicians will call you back within 24 hours. You can also expect an appointment in as little as 48 hours.

When coming to UCI Health for a second opinion, we will:

  • Confirm or rule out a diagnosis: There are more than 120 different types of brain tumors. If there is a tumor, it is important to know which type of tumor it is so you can get the right treatments. Learn more about the types of tumors we treat ›

Second opinion appointment: what to expect

You may be looking for a second opinion after receiving a diagnosis or during treatment. Regardless of where you are in your care journey, we are here to help.

If you’re seeking a second opinion, here’s what you need to know:

  • You do not need to have a brain tumor diagnosis: If you or your physician believe you have a brain tumor, you are always welcome here. We can confirm or rule out a brain tumor diagnosis. If it is not a brain tumor, we can refer you to other specialists within neurology services who may be able to help you.
  • Your physician will not be upset that you are seeking a second opinion: Most physicians welcome each other’s input on complex cases because they have a shared interest in helping patients get the care they need.
  • Getting a second opinion is likely covered by your insurance: In most cases, getting a second opinion is covered by your insurance. However, it is always a good idea to contact your health plan beforehand so you can understand if there will be any out of pocket costs.
  • We are happy to share information with your physician: It is no problem for us to share our findings and recommendations with your physician. Doing so can help the two of you discuss all of your options. We can even talk with your physician by phone if needed. We will only share your information if you give us permission to do so.
