Inpatient Program

If your adolescent is having a psychiatric or medical emergency, please dial 911 or go to your nearest emergency room for evaluation and treatment.

The UCI Health Adolescent Inpatient Program provides teenagers with the intensive level of care they need to emerge from a crisis. The program provides a caring, safe and supportive environment for both the teenager and the family.

Our inpatient program focuses on rapid assessment and stabilization of patients in crisis. Each treatment plan is tailored to individual requirements, and may include:

  • Medication, such as antidepressants
  • Group participation
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Behavior modification
  • Milieu therapy
  • Animal-assisted therapy
  • Recreational therapy
  • Family participation
The adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit, located on the second floor of the Neuropsychiatric Center, is a 14-bed locked unit serving adolescents ages 12 through 17. The average length of stay is between three to seven days.

Treatment team

Your teenager's caring, compassionate and highly skilled treatment team includes:

  • A child psychiatrist and a child psychologist, who are faculty members of the Department of Psychiatry & Human Behavior
  • Licensed social workers and nurses experienced in working with troubled teenagers
  • Testing and consultation with medical specialists, speech therapists and physical therapists, as needed
  • A credentialed teacher from Orange Unified School District to assist patients with their schoolwork while they are in the unit

In addition to schoolwork assistance, our treatment team works with the patient's school when needed to arrange for appropriate educational services following discharge.

A social worker and your nurse case manager works closely with your family to develop a comprehensive discharge plan and provide referrals for follow up care.
