Among non-smokers, colorectal cancer is the number one cancer killer.
Although there is not a single cause of colorectal cancer, certain factors can increase your risk. Some risk factors can be modified, while others are beyond your control. The good news is that no matter how high on the risk scale you are, colorectal cancer can be diagnosed early and treated successfully.

About the speaker
Dr. William E. Karnes is an associate clinical professor in the division of gastroenterology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine, and a fellowship-trained gastroenterologist. He specializes in disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, including colorectal cancer screening, gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), swallowing disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcers and esophageal disorders. He also conducts translational research on colon cancer prevention, with an emphasis on regular screening, especially among patients and families with a genetic risk for developing the disease.
