Preparing for Surgery — Mind, Body and Spirit

This class is being held virtually via Zoom until further notice.

The UCI Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care offers a class that will help increase the understanding of anesthesia and surgery, as well as help patients learn relaxation techniques to promote wellness.

The class will be led by anesthesiologists, perioperative doctors and nurses. They will discuss in detail the sequence of events during the day of surgery; description of anesthesia, other options and alternatives, risks and benefits. The second portion of the class is led by experts with regard with the mind-body connection and guided imagery. Participants are encouraged to ask any questions.

The class will cover topics on:

  • Anesthesia, surgery and pain management strategies
  • What to expect at the hospital before, during and after surgery
  • The connection between emotional well-being, health and healing
  • What to do to best prepare for surgery
  • Support services that are available

Free classes are offered every first Monday of each month*
noon to 1:30 p.m.

*except on holidays, class is next day

Classes are all held via Zoom. You will get an automatic email immediately to confirm your registration. Closer to the date of the workshop, you will receive a Zoom link with your handouts and instructions from your workshop coordinator. 

Nursing students: Our patient health education workshops are for our patients. If want to attend this workshop, please register through this Nursing Student Registration form

Nursing students will be required to review, sign and upload two documents:
(1) Student Code of Conduct and Observation Guidelines and
(2) Student Workshop Instructions and Verification Steps.

There is a limited capacity for nursing student attendees, and acceptance into the workshop is first-come, first-serve. If you’ve been accepted into the workshop, you’ll be contacted by the Patient Education Department with more information.
