The UCI Health Department of Urology is once again hosting its summer surgery program for high school students at the UC Irvine Medical Center. This program allows students to gain hands-on experience in the fields of surgery and medicine.

“We aim to ignite a passion in our future leaders by providing unmatched exposure to surgical care right here at our world-class institution,” said Dr. Jaime Landman, chairman of the department of urology.

Since 2012, more than 125 students from as far away as Canada and Hong Kong have been “summer surgeons.” This summer, the department is offering two, two-week sessions for mature high school students at least 16 years old who have excelled academically. Space is limited to 24 students per session. The dates for each session:

  • Session I: July 6 to July 17, 2015
  • Session II: July 20 to July 31, 2015 (room and board available for out-of-town/ international students)

Applications will be accepted beginning March 1, 2015. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, have a minimum GPA of 3.5, and be currently enrolled in high school (2015 senior graduates welcome). Click to apply to the Summer Surgery Program

Summer Surgeons who qualify for the program will have the opportunity to:

  • Observe live surgical cases
  • Gain hands-on experience with our state-of-the-art da Vinci robot
  • Learn actual surgical skills in open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery through surgical training workshops
  • Become proficient and certified in Basic Life Support training and CPR
  • Work in the UC Irvine Medical Education Simulation Center, a four-story facility that includes a full-scale operating room, emergency room trauma bay, obstetrics suite and critical care unit
  • Perform in-depth dissection with an emphasis on the types of surgical cases the students will see in the operating room
  • Interact and learn with a highly motivated team of surgical faculty, medical students and undergraduate students at all levels of training.

Given the breadth of exposure to surgical training and the hands-on nature of the instruction, tuition is $3,950 per student, or $5,250 with room and board.  The 2015 Summer Surgery Program offers up to four fully paid scholarships per session to qualified applicants. Any applicant is eligible; however, preference is given to those demonstrating the greatest need.  All students are encouraged to apply. Scholarships are considered on a first-come basis.
