IN THE NEWS: Reports that Americans consumed alcohol at a higher rate during the COVID-19 pandemic than previously have served to highlight the elevated health risks for those who consume alcohol excessively.
UCI Health internal medicine physician Dr. Israel De Alba told Univision that these risks can have far reaching, long-term and, in some cases, permanent consequences on the body’s systems.
“Four areas principally are involved, including the liver, the cardiovascular system, and it is important to note that excessive drinking has been linked to heart attack and dementia, among others.”
He says that moderation is key to avoiding such outcomes.
De Alba is physician with UCI Health Internal Medicine Services and a professor in the UCI School of Medicine Hospital Medicine Program. His research interests include health disparities as well as cancer screening and prevention.
