UCI Health CMIO discusses artificial intelligence in healthcare
Dr. Deepti Pandita emphasizes importance of seamless integration, centered on people
IN THE NEWS: Dr. Deepti Pandita, chief medical information officer at UCI Health, recently sat down with the Becker’s Healthcare Podcast to talk about the challenges and rewards of investing in artificial intelligence tools to improve patient care and clinical efficiency.
One of the challenges she notes is implementing tools without adding to the cognitive burden clinicians carry.
“My role is how do I make successful AI implementations that are almost invisible? Which means that [clinicians] feel like [it’s] a natural extension of existing workflows rather than adding additional burden.”
Pandita, a national leader in the field of clinical and medical informatics, also emphasized the importance of placing people at the center of new technology solutions.
“I am a big, big proponent of keeping the human in the room. Full automation is not the right solution. Keeping people cognizant of that is very important, in my view.”
Pandita recognizes the value of digitizing healthcare for those who can’t reach the hospital easily, have busy jobs or must arrange childcare. She has published opinion pieces and spoken in national meetings on the topic of bridging digital disparities.
Last year, she co-authored a position paper by the American College of Physicians. clarifying the organization’s position on AI technologies and providing recommendations for their use when giving care.
Her digital solutions have improved the health of communities, eased the cognitive burden of clinicians and promoted the wellness of the clinical workforce. Pandita’s work also has reduced the average patient stay in the hospital, saved costs and improved operational efficiencies.
