Health Insurance and Coverage Questions

Will I pay more for my prescriptions at the UCI Health Outpatient Pharmacy than at my local retail pharmacy (e.g. CVS, Walgreens, etc.)?

Most prescriptions will be covered by your prescription insurance. Copays from these plans are determined by the insurance, not the pharmacy, so our prices will be the same.

For non-covered medications or if you are uninsured, our prices are very competitive and in many cases will be lower than retail pharmacies.

What if I have an HMO and can only fill prescriptions with HMO contracted pharmacies?

You should still try to fill your prescription at the UCI Health Outpatient Pharmacy. If the UCI Health Outpatient Pharmacy cannot fill the prescription, the pharmacy staff will work with the you to get the prescription filled at a contracted pharmacy.

What forms of payment can be accepted for my co-pay?

Credit card, health spending account, cash or check.

We will make every effort to fill all prescriptions here at the UCI Health Outpatient Pharmacy. If we cannot fill your prescription, our pharmacy staff will work with you to get the prescription filled at a contracted pharmacy.

Can I get my prescriptions filled at the pharmacy if the clinic I attend is not at UC Irvine Medical Center?

Yes, the prescription request will be sent electronically to the pharmacy, and the clinic staff will call the pharmacy to request arrangement for mail order services for you.

How long will it take a prescription to get filled after the clinic staff submits it in the system?

Many prescriptions will be filled within a few minutes. Our staff will communicate any issues and delays with you when necessary.

Is there a convenient way for me to receive refills if I don’t live near UC Irvine Medical Center?

Yes, the UCI Health Outpatient Pharmacy offers free shipping for all prescriptions.

How can I move all my prescriptions to the UCI Health Outpatient Pharmacy, not just the one being sent from my current appointment?

Our pharmacy staff needs basic information, including the name of the medication, the prescription number, and the name and phone number of the current pharmacy, and we will take care of the rest.

We will work with the other pharmacy to transfer all the prescriptions to our pharmacy.

Can I have my prescriptions delivered directly to the clinic?

  • For oncology/infusion patients, we will be able to deliver directly to the clinic.
  • For all other clinics: In the next few months, we will put processes in place to deliver prescriptions to the clinics. This will help patients who are physically unable to go to the pharmacy to pick-up prescriptions.

Will the necessary supplies be provided with my medications?

Yes, we will provide all necessary supplies for you to take your prescriptions as directed.
