Gynecologic Oncology Services

Each year, more than 71,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with a cancer of the reproductive system. More than 26,000 women die of their disease, often because it wasn’t detected early enough.

Our UCI Health gynecologic cancer specialists take a holistic, proactive approach to diagnosing and treating women for all types of gynecologic diseases, including cancers of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, vulva and vagina. Our physicians work with you to develop a personalized plan of treatment.

Our team includes nationally-recognized experts in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the female reproductive system, including robot-assisted surgical techniques and HIPEC, a unique chemotherapy treatment used to destroy any lingering cancer cells left behind after surgery.

We work as a team with medical oncologists, radiation specialists and other physicians to ensure that you received the most exacting diagnosis and the most advanced care.

As part of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Orange County's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, our physicians also lead clinical trials that give our patients access to new therapies well before they are available elsewhere.

UCI Health gynecologic cancer specialists are integral members of the medical team that has kept UCI Medical Center ranked among U.S. News & World Report’s top 50 best hospitals for gynecology services over most of the last decade.

Advanced treatment: Our gynecologic oncologists use the latest surgical technologies — advanced robot-assisted surgery, laparoscopy and single-incision laparoscopic surgery — for cancers of the uterus, cervix and ovary.

Expertise: Our world-renowned surgeons provide expert treatment for advanced-stage and recurrent ovarian, fallopian tube and peritoneal cancers, including extensive cytoreduction, or debulking surgery.

We also offer our patients a unique treatment designed to kill ovarian cancer cells left behind after surgery. HIPEC, or hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, involves bathing the abdominal cavity with a heated chemotherapy solution to eradicate any remaining microscopic cancer cells.

Personalized care: We believe in tailoring diagnosis and treatment plans to each patient to maximize survival and to provide the highest quality of life during and after treatment.

Our UCI Health gynecologic cancer team embraces the latest available technologies and therapies for diagnosing and treating women with all types of gynecological cancer.

Our specialists are internationally recognized for their work in minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgical techniques, cytoreductive surgery for advanced or recurrent ovarian cancer, fallopian tubes and primary peritoneal cancers.

We also perform fertility-preserving surgery for women with early-stage cervical cancer and manage the treatment of women with early-stage endometrial cancer who want to preserve their fertility.

Our specialists are experts in the use of chemotherapy, biological therapies and radiation therapy to treat women with all types of gynecologic cancers and cancer-related issues, including:

We also treat women at higher risk of developing certain gynecologic cancers. At our Ovarian Cancer Center, we offer the only high-risk ovarian cancer screening and survivorship program in Orange County. Called Ann's Clinic, it was developed in partnership with the Queen of Hearts Foundation, an Orange County nonprofit group formed by the children of Ann S. Dobbie, who died of ovarian cancer within six months of her diagnosis.

As international leaders in major cooperative research groups, our specialists also are able to offer our patients access to leading-edge treatments and therapies years before they are available to the general public.

UCI Health gynecologic oncologists are nationally and internationally known for their expertise in treating all gynecologic cancers, including minimally invasive or robot-assisted surgery for advanced or recurrent ovarian, fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancers.

Their expertise has helped to shape the way these types of surgeries are performed around the world through their extensive research studies and medical education textbooks. They are among the first in the region to offer our patients hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy or HIPEC, a unique treatment designed to kill ovarian cancer cells left behind after surgery.
