Sanjay R. Kedhar, MD

Dr. Sanjay Kedhar is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained UCI Health surgeon, specializing in cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, complex anterior segment surgery and uveitis (ocular inflammatory disease). He is one of a small number of doctors nationally with fellowship training in both cornea and uveitis/ocular immunology from the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University — a combination that allows him to manage the most surgically and medically complex eyes with a single physician, rather than requiring patients to coordinate care across specialists.

With more than 25 years of surgical experience, Kedhar performs the full spectrum of cataract surgery, from routine procedures to the most challenging complex cases, including laser-assisted techniques and the latest premium intraocular lens technologies — multifocal, extended depth-of-focus, toric, and Light Adjustable Lens® implants — tailored to each patient’s visual goals.

As a fellowship-trained corneal surgeon, he treats a broad range of corneal disease, from Fuchs’ dystrophy and keratoconus to corneal infection, scarring, and ocular surface disease, and performs all major forms of corneal transplantation: DSEK, DMEK, penetrating keratoplasty, and Boston Keratoprosthesis. He has particular expertise in complex anterior segment surgery and the surgical management of eyes with prior surgical complications or trauma.

This surgical expertise is matched by extensive training and experience in ocular immunology/uveitis. As Chief of the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Service at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, Kedhar diagnoses and manages a broad array of autoimmune and infectious eye diseases including the use of immunosuppressive medications to control inflammation. 

Kedhar earned his medical degree from New York Medical College and completed his ophthalmology residency at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, followed by fellowship training in cornea and in uveitis/ocular immunology at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University. Before joining UCI Health, he served on the faculty of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He previously served as Chief of Ophthalmology Services at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.

An internationally recognized physician-scientist and educator, Kedhar has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and has written chapters in leading ophthalmology textbooks. He lectures nationally and internationally on corneal disease, cataract surgery, and ocular inflammatory disorders. Kedhar has been recognized as one of UCI Health’s top physicians for patient communication across all medical specialties and is known for taking the time to explain each diagnosis and involve patients directly in their care decisions.
