She earned her medical degree from the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Reno. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minn., followed by a fellowship in blood banking and transfusion medicine at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.
