More Information

Dr. William Armstrong is a nationally recognized head and neck surgeon at UCI Medical Center. A leader in the management of head and neck cancer in Southern California, he treats patients referred from across the nation. He performs robot-assisted trans-axillary thyroid surgery as well as transoral robotic surgery (TORS).

Armstrong is critically concerned with minimizing the side effects of cancer treatment and advancing minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical treatments in the head and neck. A member of the UCI Health skull base team, he uses the latest techniques and technologies to treat head and neck cancer while preserving the voice, swallowing ability and appearance. He is involved in the development of optical coherence tomography (OCT), an imaging technique with the potential to detect early cancer without a biopsy. He also participates in National Cancer Institute-funded clinical trials for oral cancer prevention and Southwest Oncology Group clinical cancer trials.

Armstrong joined the faculty in 1994 and was named chair of the Department of Otolaryngology in 2010. He previously was division chief of otolaryngology at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System.

A 1984 graduate of Pomona College, Armstrong graduated with honors from the University of Washington's School of Medicine (Seattle). He and his wife, Susan, have two children, William Harry, born December 2000, and Eric Byron, born February 2002. His recreational interests include jogging, cooking, planting fruit trees and participating in scouting and other activities with his wife and sons.

He sees patients at UCI Health — Irvine, University Head and Neck Surgeons and Ear, Nose & Throat Services.
