Medical Ethics Program

The UCI Health Medical Ethics Program is dedicated to improving excellence and quality in patient care and population health.

We seek to accomplish this by integrating all of our initiatives, which include:

  • Clinical practice, by sponsoring the UCI Health Ethics Committee and Ethics Consultation Service
  • Research, by providing ethics advisory consultation for biomedical research initiatives at UCI and supporting scholarship in bioethics
  • Ethics education, by providing educational events for UCI medical students, residents, fellows, faculty and staff
  • Community outreach, by sponsoring education events that engage healthcare providers and community members

Through each of these areas, we promote the mission of UCI Health and UCI School of Medicine: Discover. Teach. Heal.

We aim to situate the practice of medicine and biomedical research within a broad and deep understanding of — and appreciation for — the human condition.

The program’s activities cultivate habits of mind and practices that promote a holistic and humanistic approach to illness, suffering and healing. This approach is combined with a commitment to critical inquiry and scholarship in ethical theory and applied ethics.
