Could liposuction have health benefits?

IN THE NEWS: Though liposuction is a cosmetic surgery, the Orange County Register reports on a study that concludes the procedure may have health benefits by lowering the levels of some fats in the blood called triglycerides.
What do cardiologists think?
“To really see if there are decreases in heart attacks or strokes, you would have to follow the patients for several years,” said Dr. Shaista Malik, medical director of UC Irvine’s Preventive Cardiology Program. “This is just a small signal and we don’t know what it really means years down the road. The findings are still interesting and relevant. They did show a pretty big change in triglyceride levels and white blood cell counts.”
Malik was not involved in the liposuction study.
