Prostate cancer—to test or not to test?

IN THE NEWS: An Orange County Register article examined the recent changes to recommended prostate screening guidelines:

While some Orange County doctors, along with the American Urological Association, don’t agree with scrapping the PSA test altogether, they support more discussion with patients before automatically checking the PSA box on a lab form. Dr. John Fruehauf, a urologic oncologist at UC Irvine Medical Center, said he understands the concern about overtreatment. But he said doctors already use conservative, evidence-based national guidelines to determine how to proceed if PSA levels are high. “I personally want to have my PSA checked,” Fruehauf said, adding that all of his patients with prostate cancer were diagnosed after rising levels on their PSA test.
