FDA approves new drops to treat dry eye disease

Treatment is the first to stimulate corneal nerves to address tear deficiency

Dr. Marjan Farid is an internationally recognized UCI Health ophthalmologist and director of UCI Health Severe Ocular Surface Disease Program at the UCI Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute.

IN THE NEWS: The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has approved acoltremon, a neuromodulator that treats the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease. It will be sold under the brand name TRYPTYR.

She spoke with Medical Xpress about what her patients experience when managing dry eye disease.

"Many of my patients continue to face frustrating challenges with dry eye management, and there is a clear need for additional treatment options."

She also highlighted how the ophthalmic solution improves treatment.

"TRYPTYR is the first eye drop that stimulates corneal nerves to directly address tear deficiency, a known cause of dry eye disease."

Farid also regularly performs cornea, cataract and refractive surgery. She also performs limbal stem cell transplants and artificial corneal transplants to treat severe ocular surface disorders. She is a professor of clinical ophthalmology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine.
