IN THE NEWS: The UCI Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute's new 70,000-square-foot building is a rarity, and not just for its 34 patient exam rooms, the latest optical equipment and leading-edge outpatient surgical facilities, the Orange County Register writes.

The $39-million facility — which brings together eye care services, clinicians, researchers, an eye tissue bank, optometry services and much more under one roof — is the first on the UC Irvine campus to be built entirely with private donations.

The new institute, underwritten in large part by philanthropists and corporations at the heart of Orange County's powerhouse eye care industry, opens its doors to patients in mid-September.

There is "no longer a need for people to think, 'I need to go up to L.A. to get my eye care.' We have it all here," institute founding director Dr. Roger F. Steinert told the newspaper.
