Typhoon trauma injuries prove challenging

November 13, 2013

IN THE NEWS: Along with life-threatening shortages of clean water and food following Typhoon Haiyan, emergency responders are racing to treat patients with severe injuries, UCI Health disaster medicine expert Dr. Kristi Koenig told NBC News.

The storm surge caused not only drownings but also churned dangerous debris into swift moving water that had severely injured many survivors. "It's a complex combination of both blunt and penetrating trauma,” said Koenig, an emergency medicine physician and director of the UC Irvine School of Medicine's Center for Disaster Medical Services.
