NJ governor is losing weight, says UCI Health bariatric surgery expert

Chris Christie may not be thin, but his gastric banding surgery is showing success

IN THE NEWS: Embattled New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie may be hurting politically, but he appears to be on track to shed much of his girth, says UCI Health bariatric surgeon Dr. Ninh T. Nguyen.

Nguyen, president of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, tells NBC News that Christie has likely shed between 90 to 100 pounds — or about 40 percent of his excess weight since undergoing bariatric surgery in February 2013.

That's in line with expectations a year after adjustable gastric band surgery, so the governor's procedure should be considered a success, said Nguyen, who leads the UCI Health bariatric surgery team.
