A second opinion on blindness

July 01, 2014

At 90 years old, Elizabeth Perry was leading an active life.

She worked as CEO of a welding business in Garden Grove, California, managing all aspects of the business. When she started experiencing vision problems in one eye, she was fearful of missing out on all those important aspects of her life.

The first doctor she consulted informed her that she had no treatment options – blindness was inevitable.  Determined to find alternatives, Elizabeth consulted Dr. Baruch Kuppermann, a retina expert at the UCI Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute.

Kuppermann treated Elizabeth for age-related macular degeneration. Over the course of several years, he has not only prevented the condition from worsening, but improved her eyesight along the way.

“Our goal is the same as your goal – to restore your sight so you can regain your life,” Kuppermann says.

Elizabeth says she is happy to do the things she most enjoys.

“I want to take care of my employees more than anything else. They’re my family,” Elizabeth says. “Now, being able to see, I can still pay the bills and…make cookies.”
