A double mastectomy for early stage breast cancer does not have a lower risk of death than breast-conserving therapy plus radiation, yet an increasing number of women are undergoing the procedure. A new study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association concludes: Double mastectomies do not reduce mortality in patients with unilateral breast cancer and might be deemed unnecessary for most breast cancer patients.
Renowned breast cancer expert Dr. Alice Police, surgical oncologist at UCI Health Pacific Breast Care Center, discusses treating early stage breast cancer with a double mastectomy and the latest advances in breast conserving surgery.
Police is joined by Dr. Freddie J. Combs, director of breast imaging at Pacific Breast Care Center, who explains what you need to know about breast cancer screening and how to determine if you’re at high risk for breast cancer.

About the speaker
Dr. Alice Police is a surgeon who specializes in treating patients with breast cancer. Although primarily a clinician, she was the principal investigator on a national clinical trial of MarginProbe, a technology developed by Dune Medical Devices to assess lumpectomy margins in real time. UCI Health Pacific Breast Care Center is the first center in California to pair the MarginProbe system with Zeiss INTRABEAM® intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), an effective and safe alternative to traditional radiation therapy.
Police also is interested in better linking the surgeon's job with specialties in radiation oncology and pathology to improve the patient experience, streamline care and minimize patient anguish.
