UCI Health breast cancer experts to discuss game-changers in treatment

October 08, 2015

UCI Health invites the public to learn more about the latest advances in breast cancer detection and treatment at 7 p.m., Oct. 26 at the Newport Beach Public Library.

In a presentation entitled “Breast cancer: here today, cured tomorrow,” surgical oncologist Dr. Alice Police, director of the UCI Health Pacific Breast Care Center, and Dr. Freddie Combs, director of breast imaging, will discuss the most recent developments in screening, risk assessment, treatment options and surgical techniques.

Dedicated to always seeking a better breast operation, Police has been involved in clinical trials for the SAVI Scout® surgical guidance system for improved tumor location during lumpectomy, as well as for the MarginProbe® surgical system for immediate testing of excised tissue for cancer-free margins, and the Zeiss Intrabeam® intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) system, enabling some women to receive a single dose of radiation right in the operating room.

Combs is an expert in high-risk screening, diagnostic procedures and breast density assessment, and is also involved in research to improve techniques for localizing breast cancers prior to surgery.

Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions after the presentations. The library is located at 1000 Avocado Ave, Newport Beach, CA 92660.
