UCI Health expert offers tips for coping with wildfire stress

IN THE NEWS: The recent devastating California wildfires have burned more than 300,000 acres and displaced more than 23,000 people. UCI Health trauma/disaster psychology expert Merritt D. Schreiber, PhD, recently told U.S. News & World Report that wildfires no longer have a “season,” so it is important for individuals and families to be emotionally prepared before disaster strikes.

Schreiber and other mental health experts describe steps that can be taken to help ease some of the emotional upheaval caused by a wildfire or other disaster. Their recommendations include being proactive by assessing your risk and developing an evacuation plan, giving yourself time to work through your emotions, eating well and exercising, and not being afraid to ask for help.
