Post-traumatic stress effects of mass shootings spread beyond survivors and loved ones

January 08, 2016

IN THE NEWS: Across the country, signs of post-traumatic stress are spreading far beyond the survivors and loved ones of mass shootings. These tragedies have “an impact on all of us,” UCI Health trauma/disaster psychology expert Merritt Schreiber, PhD, tells the international news agency AFP. The AFP story appeared in The Japan Times.

Law enforcement, emergency personnel and other first responders on the scene also experience trauma, as do relatives and loved ones of the dead and wounded. Schreiber says there is emerging scientific evidence suggesting that the ripple effects of trauma can also be felt by those who spend a lot of time watching media coverage of these events, which creates anxiety in both adults and children.
