UCI Health maternal-fetal medicine clinic now open at Corona Regional Medical Center

Comprehensive care for high-risk pregnancies

April 13, 2016

UCI Health and Corona Regional Medical Center today announced the opening of a high-risk pregnancy clinic. The UCI Health high-risk pregnancy program provides the consultation services of perinatologists (high-risk pregnancy specialists) and neonatologists (experts in the care of high-risk newborns) in certain cases.

“Because of our training as surgeons and obstetricians, we are uniquely positioned to provide high-quality, comprehensive care for women who are involved in, or have the potential for high-risk pregnancies,” said Dr. Carol Major, director, UCI Health Maternal-Fetal Medicine Services. “We’re there every step of the way throughout pregnancy to take care of mom and make sure she and baby are doing well.”

A pregnancy may be considered high-risk if a woman experiences complications such as:

  • Diabetes
  • The expectation of twins, triplets or more
  • Genetic conditions
  • High blood pressure
  • History of miscarriage
  • Lupus
  • Maternal cardiac disease
  • Previous poor pregnancy outcomes
  • Symptoms of premature labor

As many as 10 percent of pregnancies are considered high risk, but with expert care, 95 percent of these special cases result in the birth of healthy babies.

“We work very closely with each patient’s OB-GYN to develop and carry out a plan of care,” Major said.

In addition to Major, the UCI Health high-risk obstetrics team includes Dr. Judy Chung, Dr. Afshan Hameed, Dr. Tamara Hatfield, Dr. Manuel Porto, Dr. Julianne Toohey and Dr. Deborah Wing.

The new UCI Health Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinic is located on the lower level of Corona Regional Medical Center. Appointments are available each week on Wednesday. For more information, call 951-736-6375.
