Alternative approaches can help defeat stress

May 10, 2016

IN THE NEWS:  Involving the mind is critical to beating stress and optimizing wellness, says Dr. Shaista Malik, UCI Health cardiologist and director of the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine. From chest pains to migraines, doctors must address what made the patient sick in the first place.

“There are over 1,400 biological reactions that go on in the body due to stress,” she explains in an interview with CBS2 news. “There are areas of the brain that get fed by stress, and those areas cause even more anxiety, more stress. So it really is a cycle that feeds on itself.”

That cycle can be broken by learning to change reactions to stress. Many people have found alternative approaches such as acupuncture, yoga and meditation to be effective treatments.

The interview is part of the CBS2 news special series on defeating stress.
