UCI Health neurosurgeon Sumeet Vadera, MD, appointed to Epilepsy Foundation’s National Professional Advisory Board

The Epilepsy Foundation has appointed UCI Health neurosurgeon Sumeet Vadera, MD, to its Professional Advisory Board.
As a member of the Professional Advisory Board, Vadera will support the Epilepsy Foundation’s advocacy efforts, including reviewing content for educational materials related to epilepsy surgery and providing input on foundation policy statements on issues of concern to the epilepsy community. He is one of only a few neurosurgeons to serve on the board.
“It’s an honor to serve the epilepsy community and the Epilepsy Foundation,” said Vadera, assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery, UCI School of Medicine and is director of epilepsy surgery for UCI Health. “So many people suffering with epilepsy are not aware of the surgical treatments available. I look forward to helping improve that awareness as well as advancing research into this disease.”
Vadera specializes in minimally invasive surgery for adult and pediatric patients. His clinical expertise is in neuromonitoring, specifically subdural grids and stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), and the early treatment of patients with medically intractable epilepsy. He performs laser surgery to treat deep epileptic lesions in the brain, using minimally invasive techniques as well as implantation of the Neuropace RNS® (responsive neurostimulation) device.
The lead author of several publications related to epilepsy surgery and outcomes in major neurosurgery journals, Vadera is currently a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American Association of Neurosurgeons and the Society for Brain Mapping Techniques and is board certified in neurological surgery with the American Board of Neurosurgeons.
Vadera was the first neurosurgeon on the West Coast to use a neurosurgical robotic device for precise mapping and positioning when performing minimally invasive cranial procedures, such as SEEG.
In 2017, Vadera received the Samuel Hassenbusch Young Neurosurgeon Award from the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
Vadera received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed his residency in neurological surgery and fellowship in epilepsy surgery at the Cleveland Clinic.
