UCI Health promotes O’Brien to chief nursing informatics officer

January 23, 2019

UCI Health is pleased to announce the promotion of Margaret O’Brien RN, BSN, to chief nursing informatics officer (CNIO). This position, along with the chief medical informatics officer, will guide the continuing integration of progressive technology with UCI Health’s leading patient care.

“Margaret has worked tirelessly for UCI Health and our IT organization over many years, and has been an unceasing advocate for nursing and for the patient,” said Charles Podesta, chief information officer for UCI Health.

In her new role, O’Brien will lead the integration of clinical information systems. This includes the adoption of tech-related change that maximizes patient safety, quality of care and operational efficiency.

O’Brien has been with UCI Health for more than 30 years, starting as a clinical care nurse. As a member of the health system’s informatics team, O’Brien played a key role in last year’s successful implementation of the Epic electronic medical record initiative. She has worked in patient care settings, including in several intensive care units and was a founding member of the American Nursing Informatics Association in Southern California. She recently partnered with the CNIO at UC San Diego, along with UCI Health nursing leaders to develop a robust partnership to collaborate on nursing governance issues at UCI and UCSD.
