UCI Medical Center to host SHE event for high school junior and seniors

Students will learn about potential healthcare careers for young women

April 17, 2019

UCI Medical Center is pleased to again host SHE, Summer Healthcare Experience. The program is a weeklong, annual educational event designed for young women in junior or senior high school who may be considering a career in healthcare.

“There are many more careers available in healthcare, and unless you have a personal connection or experience, you are not necessarily aware of that,” says Dr. Nimisha Parekh, director of the UCI Health Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program. “Healthcare is a good career for women. It’s stable, and it appeals to their caring, nurturing instincts, as well.”

Participants will:

  • Shadow and learn from physicians, nurses, administrators, research scientists and allied health professionals
  • Take part in hands-on labs and procedure simulations
  • Receive personalized college counseling, including test preparation, an essay-writing clinic and interview coaching
  • Collaborate on a digestive health awareness project
  • Complete American Heart Association Basic Life Support training
  • Meet mentors and like-minded local peers
  • Graduate with a certificate of completion and a letter of reference

The SHE program was the brainchild of Dr. Parekh, who says it’s been a great success.

“We have gotten emails thanking us for the opportunity to learn about so many different healthcare career choices, as well as hearing about the different ways that people got into their profession,” said Parekh, director of the gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship program with the UCI School of Medicine. “One participant let us know that she received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Wisconsin in Madison. “

SHE will be held from July 26-Aug. 2, 2019 at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

The deadline to apply for the program is April 22, 2019. For more information, please visit https://www.medicine.uci.edu/gastroenterology/she.asp
