Lung Cancer Services

Do you have a history of smoking tobacco or exposure to asbestos? If so, you may be a higher risk for lung cancer.

Our UCI Health lung specialists can help you assess this risk and take the appropriate next steps. We offer expert lung cancer screening with low-dose spiral computed tomography (LDCT) for people at high risk for lung cancer who may not have symptoms of the disease.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. At present, curative treatments are possible only for lung cancer diagnosed in its early stages. Because this disease can go unnoticed for many years, most patients aren't diagnosed until the disease is at an advanced stage.

A major national study of current and former heavy smokers has shown that LDCT screening is superior to standard X-rays at detecting lung cancer at early stages, when treatment is more effective, according to the National Cancer Institute.

If you suspect that you or a loved one may be at risk for developing lung cancer, please call us at 714-456-8000 to schedule a consultation.

Our UCI Health pulmonary specialists are leaders in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of lung cancers and diseases of the lung and chest.

Our team treats the following conditions:
  • Mesothelioma
  • Metastatic tumors invading the chest
  • Thymomas and other mediastinal tumors

Our team members thoroughly review your medical history and test results. Your case is also presented to a multispecialty tumor board for a complete evaluation and recommendations for a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Because we are affiliated with the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only center in Orange County designated for excellence by the National Cancer Institute, we offer treatments that may include highly specialized procedures and therapies not available to the general community.

Our board-certified physicians and highly trained clinical staff members are dedicated to ensuring your well-being in a caring and comfortable environment.

At UCI Health, our board-certified pulmonary specialists are experts at detecting and treating all conditions and diseases that affect the lungs, airways and chest.

Because we work at Orange County's only university medical center, you have access to the latest technologies and newest therapies for lung cancer and other pulmonary conditions.

We are leaders in non-surgical interventions to destroy tumors blocking airways, including:
  • Laser ablation
  • Photodynamic therapy
  • Cryosurgery
  • Rigid bronchoscopy and airway stenting
  • Drug therapy targeted to the molecular profile of a patient's tumors

When surgery is indicated, our cardiothoracic specialists usually take a minimally invasive approach, using thoracoscopic and robot-assisted procedures to excise lung tumors.

Our lung cancer screening program offers low-dose spiral computed tomography (LDCT) scans for smokers, former smokers and others who may be at greater risk for developing lung cancer. A national study showed 20 percent fewer lung cancer deaths among people who were screened with LDCT rather than standard chest X-rays, according to the National Cancer Institute.

At UCI Health, our lung cancer specialists are actively involved in multiple research projects. We are working to ensure that future patients have better diagnostic and treatment options, as well as access to therapies that improve quality of life and offer relief from pain and discomfort.

Some of these studies involve clinical trials that give our patients access to promising therapies well before they are available to the general public.

One such promising area of research involves genetic mutations in different sub-types of lung cancer. Drugs such as crizotinib that are designed to target these mutations have shown significant effects in slowing, stopping or eliminating cancer cells.
