Robotic Oncology Services: Conditions & Treatments
At UCI Health, our surgical specialists use the da Vinci Surgical System® to treat many types of cancers and benign conditions. Our areas of specialty include:
Cardiothoracic robot-assisted surgery
UCI Health cardiothoracic surgeons use robot-assisted procedures to treat cardiovascular disease. This provides the benefits of conventional open-heart surgery with the recovery advantages of minimally invasive techniques. We perform robot-assisted procedures for:
- Atrial fibrillation
- Coronary artery bypass
- Esophagectomy
|
- Lung and mediastinal tumors
- Mitral valve repair
- Thymectomy
|
Colorectal robot-assisted surgery
Our colorectal surgeons place a strong emphasis on preserving quality of life for patients with colon and rectal disorders, using the da Vinci system to perform minimally invasive, sphincter-saving procedures, including:
- Colon resection
- Rectal resection
|
- Small intestine resection
- Ulcerative colitis surgery with ileal pouch
|
Gastrointestinal robot-assisted surgery
UCI Health surgeons with the Chao Family Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center perform minimally invasive robot-assisted procedures for several gastrointestinal conditions, including:
- Achalasia
- Esophageal and gastric cancer
- Gallbladder disease
|
- Hiatal hernia
- Pancreatic cancer
- Reflux disease
|
Gynecologic robot-assisted surgery
Robot-assisted procedures are less invasive and do not require large incisions, making them an ideal choice for many gynecological surgeries.
UCI Health gynecologic oncologists offer minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgeries for the treatment of cancer and other conditions involving the female reproductive system. These conditions include:
- Cervical cancer
- Complex gynecologic problems
- Hysterectomy
- Incontinence procedures
|
- Ovarian cancer
- Pelvic prolapse repairs
- Uterine cancer

Head and neck robot-assisted surgery
A UCI Health otolaryngologist was the first on the West Coast to perform a robot-assisted thyroidectomy using the da Vinci system. We are one of the only medical groups in Southern California to perform robot-assisted thyroid surgeries.
Our head and neck surgeons also perform transoral robot-assisted surgery (TORS), which allows access to the throat and voice box to perform surgical resections through the mouth, avoiding disfiguring facial incisions.
Urologic robot-assisted surgery
The precision of robot-assisted technology is ideal for delicate and complex urologic surgeries. These include prostatectomies, in which the target site is tightly confined and surrounded by nerves that affect urinary control and erectile function.
Our UCI Health urological team has developed innovations in robot-assisted prostatectomies to help successfully rejoin the urethral tube to the bladder, along with a patented cooling device to protect fragile nerves and preserve continence and erectile function.
In addition to robot-assisted hypothermic prostatectomy, our urologists offer minimally invasive robot-assisted surgery for many other urological conditions including:
