Every year more than 70,000 U.S. teens and adults under 40 are diagnosed with cancer. It's a disease more often associated with older people, so adolescents and young adults tend to be diagnosed at a later stage, and with cancers that are often more virulent.

Yet they react very differently to standard treatments for older adults and small children.

Rare youth cancer program

The young adult cancer program at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of the few in the United States devoted to treating this unique patient population.

Our center's highly trained specialists not only work together to combat disease, they also address the myriad emotional and psychosocial needs of these youthful patients, who are often trying finish their education, build their careers or plan for a family.

Help on path to survivorship

We offer specialized care and services—including fertility counseling, psychological support, social services and health advocacy—at each stage of a patient's journey from diagnosis to survivorship.

The cancer center also has hosted dozens of educational and informational events for community physicians and patients in recent years to raise awareness and significantly improve medical and psychosocial outcomes for young adults with cancer.
