UCI Medical Center is now UCI Health ― Orange
New name for flagship location aligns naming of the academic health system’s six hospitals
Orange, Calif. — UCI Medical Center has a new name: UCI Health ― Orange.
The change reflects the evolving role and impact of UCI Health throughout the region as one of the largest academic health systems in California. It also brings the names of all UCI Health hospitals into alignment:
- UCI Health ― Fountain Valley
- UCI Health ― Lakewood
- UCI Health ― Los Alamitos
- UCI Health ― Placentia Linda
- UCI Health ― Irvine, opening December 2025
A regional leader
The University of California Regents purchased Orange County Medical Center and renamed it UCI Medical Center in 1976. Since then, UCI Health ― Orange has become the region’s leading provider of tertiary and quaternary care and one of the nation’s best academic medical centers.
UCI Health ― Orange is home to the county’s only:
- Level I adult and Level II pediatric trauma center
- High-risk perinatal/neonatal program
- National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center
- Gold level 1 geriatric emergency department
- Regional burn center
It has also received the prestigious Magnet Recognition for nursing excellence five times, which fewer than 10% of Magnet hospitals in the world have achieved.
The UCI Health Comprehensive Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center is the first stroke center in the county to be certified by The Joint Commission, a designation reserved for hospitals able to receive and treat the most complex cases. UCI Health Cardiology Services has the first heart failure program in Southern California to earn Gold Seal of Approval certification by The Joint Commission.
UCI Health Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Services is first and only adult hematopoietic stem cell/bone marrow transplant program in Orange County.
The medical center also provides ambulatory, rehabilitation and mental health services, as well as the full spectrum of specialty care. It is the primary teaching location for the UC Irvine School of Medicine.
