Orange, Calif. — UCI Health trauma surgeon Dr. Alliya S. Qazi was honored at the First Responders Dinner hosted by the Orange County Business Council for her efforts to save the lives of injured Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department recruits after an accident.

On the morning of Nov. 16, 2022, nearly 75 LASD recruits were on a training run in Whittier. A wrong-way driver plowed into the recruits, injuring more than two dozen of them.

Several critically injured cadets were transported to UCI Medical Center, where Qazi was on duty. She quickly coordinated their triaging and treatment. Because of Qazi and the efforts of the trauma team, the cadets who were brought to UCI Health survived.

“Dr. Qazi's accolade is not just an individual recognition but echoes the shared values and mission of UCI Health,” says UCI Health CEO Chad T. Lefteris.

“From swiftly addressing local emergencies to pioneering international medical initiatives, she exemplifies the essence of our institution. Through professionals like Dr. Qazi, our mission to ‘Discover, Teach, Heal’ becomes our lived reality.”

Qazi was honored alongside eight other first responder organizations at the inaugural event on Sept. 12, 2023. Read about the honorees.
