UCI Health and Sprinter Health collaborate to close care gaps in the community
Partnership delivers fully covered in-home preventive care for Medi-Cal patients
March 12, 2024
Orange, Calif. and Menlo Park, Calif. ― UCI Health, one of the nation’s leading academic health systems, has established a partnership with Sprinter Health, a technology-enabled provider of in-home preventive services, to bring accessible and equitable care to patients facing barriers to regular health screenings.
The collaboration launched last year allows UCI Health Medi-Cal patients to receive in-home services at no cost, including blood draws for diabetes and kidney health monitoring labs, diabetic eye exams, blood pressure checks, pediatric lead screenings and more.
“Partnering with Sprinter Health reflects our commitment to ensuring that even our most vulnerable populations have access to high-quality preventive care that they deserve,” said Randolph P. Siwabessy, chief financial officer and senior vice president, Finance & Value Transformation for UCI Health. “By eliminating barriers such as transportation and financial constraints, we’re making a meaningful difference in our community’s health outcomes.”
The new in-home service offering aligns closely with the goals of the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) to create a more coordinated, patient-centered and equitable Medi-Cal system for millions of Californians.
Since launching with Sprinter Health in late 2023, UCI Health has reached more Medi-Cal members across Orange County and exceeded California DHCS Quality Incentive Pool (QIP) program targets for four prioritized quality measures.
The program has continued into 2024, addressing care disparities among underserved communities while extending the leading patient experience at UCI Health with a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 100 and a 98% on-time arrival rate. The NPS measures customer loyalty, satisfaction and enthusiasm with a company.
“It’s rare to be able to partner with an institution dedicated to addressing health equity and elevating the standard of care,” said Max Cohen, co-founder and CEO of Sprinter Health. “UCI Health isn’t just a national leader in clinical excellence, they’re an organization who really believes in putting the patient first. Sprinter has been able to extend the reach of UCI Health into the home with the collection of vital clinical data, empowering providers and patients to foster better health through modern forms of care delivery.”
Sprinter Health's innovative model combines the technology for mobile healthcare delivery and omnichannel patient engagement with a workforce of phlebotomy-certified “Sprinters” living in the communities they serve. Sprinter Health engages patients with open care gaps in their preferred language to book convenient in-home visits for diagnostics that help UCI Health providers manage diabetes and hypertension, monitor kidney health, and screen for early detection of colorectal cancer and other treatable health conditions.
UCI Health and Sprinter Health are poised to expand the partnership to additional service lines later this year, including transitional care and oncology, paving the way for a new patient-centric standard in healthcare delivery. The Regents of the University of California have completed a strategic investment in Sprinter Health following the success of the partnership, further showcasing their commitment to prioritize health equity and improved access.
