Community members celebrate new UCI Health — Irvine acute care hospital
Ahead of December opening, hundreds braved rain to tour innovative new facility, enjoyed live performances and health fair
Orange, Calif. — Hundreds of south Orange County residents and UCI Health co-workers came together over a wet, rainy weekend to celebrate the upcoming opening of UCI Health — Irvine, the growing academic health system’s sixth hospital.
When it opens in December, the 144-bed facility will be the nation’s first all-electric acute care hospital, serving the residents of coastal and south Orange County.
“The UCI Health — Irvine state-of-the-art acute care hospital facility provides patients have full and convenient access to leading-edge care that is the hallmark of academic medicine,” said UCI Health President and CEO Chad T. Lefteris.
“The hospital also fulfills UC Irvine’s vision, established 60 years ago, to build a medical center close the academic campus where we can train the next generation of medical, nursing, pharmacy and public health students.”
Its opening will complete the medical complex on Jamboree Road. Last year, the Joe C. Wen & Family Advanced Care Center and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building began serving patients.
Quality, sustainability and care
Tours of the new hospital showcased how patient safety, quality care and sustainability are woven into the hospital’s design.
Those who toured the seven-story hospital were able to experience:
- Patient rooms that are 250 square feet on average — larger than standard hospital rooms — to allow families and loved ones to remain more comfortable when visiting.
- 75-inch smart televisions in each room where patients will be able to order delicious food, interact with their care team, get discharge instructions, condition and treatment information and stream entertainment.
- Natural light, artwork emphasizing soothing natural landscapes, outdoor terraces and gardens full of native plants.
- One of the nation’s first all-electric kitchens to serve a hospital.
- Sustainable furnishings and furniture free of harmful chemicals, vapors and materials.
Those who attended the community grand opening were provided with a passport, to guide them on their journey through the health fair.
They received a stamp in their password at each of the variety of booths that featured services available at the new hospital including cancer care, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, among others.
Once the passport book was full, attendees turned it in for a UCI Health cooler bag.
Attendees also enjoyed live yoga sessions, music from local bands, the UC Irvine spirit squad, along with the Anaheim Ducks street team.
