IN THE NEWS: The surgical megafloor that runs under UCI Health — Irvine and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building is redefining surgical efficiency.

UCI Health trauma and critical care surgeon Dr. Sebastian Schubl spoke to Modern Healthcare about the benefits of centralizing everything from the operating rooms to supply storage.

Nurses do not have to leave the operating room to track down supplies, a critical aspect of patient safety. The time to complete surgeries has also declined and the volume of surgeries is increasing.

Schubl is the medical director of operations at UCI Health, specializing in all aspects of care for injured patients and complex intensive care unit patients. His clinical interests include sepsis, surgical infections, chest trauma and rib fracture stabilization, and minimally invasive hernia repair.

He serves as director of medical operations for UCI Health. A professor at the UC Irvine School of Medicine in the Division of Trauma & Critical Cre Surgery, his research interests focus on rib injury, surgical infections and necrotizing soft tissue infections, as well as translational work on trauma patient outcomes.
