What is uterine artery embolization?
UAE is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks blood flow to fibroids.
Without the same blood supply, fibroids shrink over time. During the procedure, your doctor places a thin catheter into an artery in your wrist or groin. Using imaging, the doctor guides the catheter to the blood vessels that feed the fibroids. Tiny particles are then delivered through the catheter to block that blood flow.
What are uterine fibroid symptoms?
Many fibroids do not cause symptoms. When they do, symptoms may include:
- Heavy bleeding
- Pain in the abdomen or lower back
- Pain during sex
- Pelvic pressure or fullness
- Frequent urination
- Bowel changes
- Fertility or pregnancy concerns
Am I a candidate for uterine artery embolization?
UAE may be an option if you:
- Have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids
- Have symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pain or pelvic pressure
- Have persistent bleeding or anemia
- Have not found relief for medication
- Want to avoid surgery, if medically appropriate
Is uterine artery embolization painful?
You will receive medication to help keep you comfortable during the procedure.
Cramping and pain are common after treatment. These symptoms often improve over several days, and you can manage them with medication.
Are there risks to uterine artery embolization?
Compared with open surgery, UAE may offer a shorter recovery and a lower risk of some complications.
Possible risks include:
- Bleeding, bruising or infection
- Injury to an artery or to the uterus
- Problems with future pregnancy
- Ovarian problems or premature menopause, especially after age 45
- Delayed diagnosis of a rare cancer that was mistaken for a fibroid

Before your procedure, your doctor will review your medical history and order any needed lab tests. You may need to stop taking certain medications, including blood thinners.
Your care team may also ask you to fast before the procedure and follow specific day-of instructions.
What happens after uterine artery embolization?
Most patients go home the same day, usually within four to six hours. Some patients may need to stay overnight depending on their needs. You may experience cramping during the first one to two days after the procedure. You may also have nausea, a mild fever, flu-like symptoms, discharge or light bleeding. Your care team will explain how to manage these symptoms at home.
You may return to light activity or work within seven to 10 days.
You will likely have a follow-up visit with your interventional radiologist within one to two weeks.
