UCI Health Bariatric Surgery Services has achieved renewed accreditation by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBASQIP), a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Renewed designation as a Comprehensive Center with Obesity Medicine Qualifications signals that the UCI Health bariatric surgery team provides high-quality, multidisciplinary patient-centered care. The accreditation also is an affirmation of the team's commitment to ongoing quality and patient-safety improvements.

"It is an honor to again receive reaccreditation by the American College of Surgeons, the gold standard for surgical quality accreditation," said Dr. Marcelo W. Hinojosa, director of UCI Health Bariatric Surgery Services, which has been designated a Comprehensive Center with Obesity Medicine Qualifications since 2007.

"The accreditation is a testament to our team's dedication to excellence. Patients can be assured that everyone on our metabolic and bariatric surgery team is committed to providing safe, optimal care to achieve the best outcomes.”

MBSAQIP accredits U.S. and Canadian inpatient and outpatient bariatric surgery centers that have undergone an independent, voluntary and rigorous peer evaluation in accordance with recognized bariatric surgical standards. This rigorous accreditation process promotes uniform, standardized benchmarks and supports continuous quality improvement.

UCI Health board-certified UCI Health bariatric surgeons specialize in all leading procedures to help patients achieve their weight-loss goals, including:

In addition to its world-class surgeons, the metabolic and bariatric surgery team includes experienced nurses, patient coordinators, dietitians, anesthesiologists and psychologists, all of whom provide patients with the best support available.

The program also specializes in managing surgery revisions and complications from previous weight-loss procedure. The team also works closely with medical weight management experts at UCI Medical Center in Orange, Gottschalk Medical Plaza in Irvine, the UCI Health Weight Management Program in Irvine and the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute in Irvine. The bariatric medicine and bariatric surgery services are a part of the UCI Health Comprehensive Weight Control Center.
